Is Your Mission Front And Center? 18 Places It Should Be.

Here's a quick checklist to make sure that your mission is always IN your mind, ON the tip of your tongue, and AT the ready.

Is your mission statement...

  1. ... in your annual report?
  2. ... on your website?
  3. ... at donor meetings?
  4. ... in electronic newsletters?
  5. ... on social media and social networks?
  6. ... at Board and staff meetings?
  7. ... in your personnel policies?
  8. ... on your Board, staff and volunteer orientation and training manuals?
  9. ... at site visits by donors, funders, volunteers?
  10. ... in your email signature?
  11. ... on your business cards?
  12. ... at coalition or partnership meetings?
  13. ... in your strategic plan?
  14. ... on videos?
  15. ... at employee recognition events and parties?
  16. ... in your reception area?
  17. ... on your blog?
  18. ... at public speaking opportunities?

What else do you do to keep your mission at front and center?

Thanks for the great feedback, everyone! Keep it coming! Sherry, you're absolutely right that "all fundraising events" should be on this list! Thank you!

Laura,
Great list and we know that people like to use checklist as they work through a tasks, so great post.

I suggest the list should also include "all fundraising events". Displaying the mission on the presentation screen during the reception, in programs and during the chairs' comment are options.

This is great.. It is exactly what I've been discussing with my team lately.
I think it is very important to let your supporters know just exactly what your MISSION is. Othwerwise, how will they know what they are supporting?

I am very grateful for this post. Thank you!

A colleague on LinkedIn just suggested these additional locations, too.

- in every set of performance objectives (department, unit, indivdual), ensuring they are worded in a way that helps everyone see how their work advances the mission
- in every policy or project proposal, with a requirement that the policy or proposal explicitly say how it serves the mission and is consistent with the values
- in every decision support document prepared for the Board or for management

Keep 'em coming!
